How to Create Textured Pictures

by: hmarynka

If you were to look at the photo on the right, is it a photograph or is it a painting?

Using Photoshop, I will show you how I do those textured pictures that so many of you have asked me questions about.

If you use Photoshop you need to know the basic operations in this program, because even though I was trying to illustrate and explain every stage, it is impossible to cover everything. Let's get started.

I am going to turn this picture:

Into this one

This takes some patience and for the first time it will not be the fastest, however you get better with every picture, so practice, practice, practice!

IMAGE PREPARATION STAGE

1.opened picture up
2.duplicate layer
3. go to image-adjustments-saturation click 'colorize and turn it into sepia

Photobucket

4. dublicate layer again

5. go to the curves and adjust them so the coat looks the way you want. Ignore everything else, the coat is the thing which matters.

/t277/hmarynka/2coatcurvesadjustment.jpg

6.dublicate the 'background copy layer. Now I rename it 'face.

Photobucket

Here I am adjusting my daughters face curves to the level I want to. Ignore everything else.

Larger: http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/4leveladjustmentsface.jpg

7. click on 'Layer mask', make sure black colour is selected and click on paint bucket tool , then click on your image. The layer will become invisible.

Photobucket

8. now make sure the layer mask is clicked on the layer pallet, chose white color and soft paint brush. Now I paint around my daughter's face and the layer 'face' which has been masked out starts to show up in her face area.

Photobucket

Larger: http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/6paintingfacemask.jpg

9. by clicking on the eye symbol of the top layer you can see the difference with and without your latest adjustments.

10. now press (ctrl e) keys together so the two top layers will merge together. I rename the layer 'backgroundcopy2' into 'coat'

11. now I want to work on my daughter's skirt which I want to be more prominent.

I duplicate layer and call it 'skirt'.

As before I go and adjust curves ignoring everything else but the skirt. Then I apply the layer mask as before.

Photobucket

Larger: http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/7paintingtheskirtlayer.jpg

The beauty of masking is that if you do something wrong, you can change the colour from black to white (or vice-versa) and paint over the wrong place and it will reverse back to what it was before.

12. press ctrl e to merge layers again.

Now image preparation stage is over.

TEXTURE STAGE

13. I open up the picture of texture I have which I want to try out. click (ctrl a) to select all (ctrl c) - to copy it, go to my picture and click ctrl v to paste it on top of it. It is too small, so I click on the little arrow tool, then on a little chain symbol to log the ration and drag I to the size I need.

Photobucket

Larger: http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/8pastingtextureontop.jpg

If you don't click on the chain, it will drag in different directions, it doesn't matter for this layer too much, but when you work with people's pictures, they are getting distorted.

14. once the texture layer covering all the picture, I go to the layer pallete and change the opacity till 59%. You can see the image underneath now.

/t277/hmarynka/9reducingopacityoftexture.jpg

15. I want some elements of the picture be more visible from under the texture, so I apply mask again. However I do not paint it black this time. I want all the layer be visible and only some parts of it masked out. so I leave it white as it is, choose the black colour and with low opacity brush brush over the areas I want to fade.

Photobucket

16. on this stage you can play with as many textures as you want. I will keep it simple and move to the next stage.

SHADING STAGE

For this image it might not be too important but I will show how I do it.

17. I create a new layer, call it 'shading'. Make sure it is selected. Ten choose the lasso tool and circle around the area where I want the shading to go. Then I click on paint bucket and paint it in black. Then go do 'select' bar at the top and make sure it is deselected.

Larger:

18. go to filters, and apply strong Gaussian blur to this layer. Then drag it underneath the texture layer in your layer pallete. You do as many shading areas as you wish.

19. now I want to reduce the texture layer even more in that corner where shading is, so I click on texture mask and paint it with the black brush again until ready.

APPLYING GRUNDGE TEXTURES

Now I want to add some extra texture.

20. i create a new layer and call it 'grundge'. Then I click on a paint brush and go to select suitable brush for it. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD LOTS OF GRUNDGE BRUSHES FOR FREE AT www.deviantart.com, or just google them.

21. select white colour and low opacity and go over the picture.

Larger:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/12selectingthegrundgebrush.jpg

22. I want to add some more grudge, but in black, so I create a new layer call it 'grundge 2', select different grunge brush and black colour and paint over the picture. I do not paint it completely, but add some dabs here and there.

23. I can reduce the opacity on these layers by sliding the little bar in layer pallete.

To erase some of the texture you can use the 'erase tool'.

DODGE AND BURN STAGE

You can do without it, But I think it adds beautiful finish.

24.As I mentioned in my previous tutorial ('how I did it' thread), I use the action for it called 'Paint with light' there you will find the website where you can download it for free. It is very simple.

I just run this action and get a gray layer.

Larger:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/15action.jpg

25. select 'burn tool', ''shadows' in the top bar and 11% opacity and go over the darker areas of the picture. It makes them darker.

Larger:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/17burntool.jpg

26. then I select 'dodge' tool, 'highlights' and go over the lighter areas-it makes the lighter even more.

Larger:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/16dodgetool.jpg

Altogether it gives the picture more contrast.

Here is goes:

Larger:
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t277/hmarynka/after-1.jpg

27. you can do the dodge and burn without this gray layer, however you might need to merge all your layers into one.

This is a very basic 'for demonstration only' texture play. You can do so much more layers and plays with it. I hope it is not too complicated and illustrations are helpful.
